Trump Administration Cuts Committees; 500 Sick in European Salmonella Outbreak

Happy Friday! It’s March 7th, 2025. The weekend is almost here, but food safety never sleeps. Here’s what you need to know today.

What to know: The Trump Administration has eliminated two USDA food safety advisory committees that have been in place for decades.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture notified committee members of the move on March 6.

The committees are the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods (NACMCF) and the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection (NACMPI).

More than 500 people have been sickened over two years in multiple European countries as part of Salmonella outbreaks linked to sprouted alfalfa seeds.

Between January 2023 and January 2025, 509 ill people were reported in 10 countries. The most affected nation was Norway, with 257 cases, followed by Sweden with 110, and Finland with 94.

Some employees at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who were laid off by the Trump Administration have been invited to return to work.

About 180 employees received an email about their employment status, according to the Associated Press. The email went out on March 4 with a subject line that said, “Read this e-mail immediately.”

What to know: The creation of the Africa Food Safety Agency has moved a step closer to reality following a meeting in February.

Adoption of the statute to establish the agency was taken during the 38th ordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
