Senator Pushes for Safer Shrimp Imports; Italy Reports 60 HUS Cases in 2024

What to know: U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-MS, has introduced the Safer Shrimp Imports Act, legislation aimed at tightening federal inspection standards for imported shrimp.

The bill, S.667, would require foreign shrimp exporters to meet U.S. food safety standards and undergo inspections to prevent importation of contaminated shrimp.

Almost 60 cases of a serious condition that develops after an E. coli infection were reported in 2024 in Italy. One child died.

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a severe complication associated with E. coli infections that causes kidney failure and sometimes brain damage.

Portuguese authorities have uncovered illegal slaughter operations, olive oil fraud, and food unfit for consumption in various operations during recent months.
