Salmonella outbreak sickens over 100; Animal operations blamed for leafy greens risk

It’s Thursday, May 22nd, 2025. Let’s take a look at the latest food safety developments.

What to know: The patient count in an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections has jumped to 103, with no source yet identified as the route of the pathogen.

Research published this week shows that animal feeding operations continue to be a problem in terms of E. coli outbreaks linked to leafy greens.

As evidenced by outbreaks from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) from 2009 to 2021, leafy greens growing fields can be contaminated in a variety of ways related to animal operations such as feedlots and grazing pastures, according to a study published in the Journal of Food Protection.

A Washington family is suing Safeway and its parent company, Albertsons, claiming that a mislabeled cookie caused the death of 78-year-old Margaret Jean “Peggy” Bryant, which they say exposes serious failures in food safety protocols.

On April 7, 2023, Bryant purchased what she believed was an oatmeal raisin cookie from a Safeway store in Duvall, WA. According to court documents filed this month, the cookie was a peanut butter cookie mislabeled by the store’s bakery staff, containing an allergen to which Bryant was severely allergic.

An inquiry into bottled water manufacturers in France has criticized authorities for allowing Nestlé to use prohibited treatments.

A total of 28 recommendations were made, aimed at securing the quality of mineral and spring water.

Testing by scientists has found Salmonella in imported chicken meat in Switzerland.

Researchers investigated Salmonella prevalence in 200 chicken samples from Swiss retail stores. Six imported samples tested positive and the isolates were all Salmonella Infantis.
