Montana's ‘Food Freedom’ challenged in court; Uruguay reports more foodborne outbreaks

It’s Tuesday, May 6th, 2025. From recalls to regulations, here’s what’s making headlines in food safety.

What to know: A former Montana food safety officer is suing state officials over their embrace of “Food Freedom” laws, which allow the sale of homemade foods with minimal regulation.

Jeffrey Havens, now a biology teacher, argues the laws endanger public health and violate the state constitution. His detailed legal battle challenges Montana’s shift away from traditional food safety oversight, especially for high-risk canned goods.

Data from Uruguay shows a rise in the number of outbreaks and people getting sick from 2021 to 2024.

Information on patients and outbreaks of foodborne illness between 2021 and 2024 was recently released by the Ministry of Public Health (Ministerio de Salud Pública).
