Haribo pulls products after cannabis found; Pesticide report faces backlash

It’s Thursday, May 29th, 2025. We’re nearly through the month — here’s what’s happening in food safety today.

What to know: Haribo has recalled sweets in the Netherlands because of potential contamination with cannabis.

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) said there are packs in circulation with sweets that can lead to health complaints, such as dizziness, when consumed.

A new federal report linking pesticide use to children’s health issues is stirring major controversy. The Make America Healthy Again Commission, led by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., is being praised by food safety advocates and sharply rebuked by farm groups.

Companies in the food industry in the United Kingdom have been urged to make sure they are prepared for upcoming legislation around fraud.

Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, the failure to prevent fraud offense comes into effect on Sept. 1 and will apply to organizations that meet at least two of the following criteria: More than 250 employees, more than £36 million ($48.8 million) annual turnover, or more than £18 million ($24.4 million) in total assets.

European experts identified seven emerging risks and requested information on a host of other issues as part of meetings held in 2024, according to a recent report.
