It's Monday, October 6, 2025. Today’s newsletter spotlights urgent food safety issues, from a massive U.S. corndog recall to a deadly E. coli outbreak in Germany.
Foster Poultry Farms LLC of Livingston, CA, is recalling more than 3.8 million pounds of chicken corn dog products that may be contaminated with extraneous material, specifically pieces of wood embedded in the batter.
A major German E. coli outbreak also includes a woman from the United States who had been to the country.
A total of 255 cases are linked to the outbreak.
Effective Oct. 31 the FDA will require import certifications for all shrimp and spices within certain parts of Indonesia because of the risk of radioactivity.
About 20 people have been hospitalized in a region of Sweden with suspected Listeria infections.
Stockholm’s infection control unit said people may have been infected with Listeria after eating at a restaurant in central Stockholm.
OPINION — By Roger Hancock and Vanessa Coffman
“Food recalls happen almost daily, but the way they’re communicated to consumers is far from consistent. Despite years of discussion and some progress from regulators (the FDA has provided guidance, and the USDA has their own template) there’s still no universal standard for recall notifications – both what they say and how they are disseminated.”
