FDA hits pause on front-label rule; Study reveals diarrhea risks beyond kids

It’s Friday, May 9th, 2025. We’re rounding out the week with today’s top headlines in food safety.

What to know: The FDA is delaying implementation of a rule that would require food companies to print nutritional information on the front labels of their products.

The proposed rule was developed by President Biden’s Administration with a comment period on it scheduled to close on May 16. The rule is designed to help consumers make better choices to avoid chronic health problems.

Researchers have increased the understanding of diarrheal disease in older populations in South Africa.

A study examined trends in enteric pathogen prevalence in participants older than 5 years of age at selected sites between 2018 and 2023.

The Food and Drug Administration uses import alerts to enforce U.S. food safety regulations for food from foreign countries. The agency updates and modifies the alerts as needed.
