CDC says cruise inspections still on; Teacher gives THC candy to students by mistake

What to know: Recent media stories about the status of cruise ship health inspections have confused companies and consumers because of staff reductions at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

However, the CDC is continuing the inspections under the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP), according to a statement by an agency spokesperson to Food Safety News.

A recent incident at a Buffalo public school has raised alarms about the food safety risks posed by edible marijuana products that resemble common candies, particularly for children. 

On April 1, a teacher at the William J. Grabiarz School of Excellence inadvertently gave two students gummies laced with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), mistaking them for regular Sour Patch Kids candy.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has provided more details about Campylobacter and Salmonella infections in 2023.

The number of reported Campylobacter cases in England rose from 54,884 in 2022 to 60,014 in 2023. More recent data shows a further increase to more than 70,300 in 2024.

Representatives from various food agencies met in Chile recently to discuss the use of technology to improve food safety systems.

The sixth annual meeting of the International Heads of Food Agencies Forum (IHFAF) was held in Santiago earlier this month. The forum was attended by officials from more than 18 countries and international institutions.
