What to know: More than 50 people fell ill across the United Kingdom as part of a Salmonella outbreak in 2024.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) investigated a cluster of Salmonella Blockley infections identified through the analysis of whole genome sequencing (WGS) data.

A spice mix-up in 2022 led to 14 people in British Columbia and Ontario falling ill from a toxic plant sold as sand ginger powder, according to a study published in Toxins in March. 

Described as Ontario’s first mass toxin poisoning event, the incident triggered public health warnings and updates to food safety protocols.

Cargill Kitchen Solutions of Lake Odessa, MI, is recalling 212,268 pounds of liquid egg products that may contain a cleaning solution with sodium hypochlorite, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

More than six months after a deadly Listeria outbreak was traced to Boar’s Head deli meat, the company has hired a chief food safety officer.

Natalie Dyenson will begin work for the family owned, billion dollar company on May 12, according to a statement from company officials.

Various new and ongoing trade issues were discussed at a recent World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting that also covered the picture of notifications in 2024.

Attendees at the March meeting of the WTO Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures addressed trade concerns related to food safety and animal and plant health.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warning letters to two companies for significant violations of the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP), which requires importers to ensure that food brought into the United States meets federal safety standards. 

The letters, sent to AH USA Group Inc. in California and Gonzar Produce LLC in Texas, highlight ongoing noncompliance despite previous inspections and opportunities to address issues.
